News snippets

Birthday surprise: Over the past 90 years, the German Grand Prix has seen a lot of action, excitement and surprises. Nico Rosberg, Nico Hülkenberg and Pascal Wehrlein have enjoyed quite a few of them, either in the cockpit or as a fan watching on TV or from the stands. In the context of the official media day, they have now experienced that history first hand for themselves – at the wheel of three legendary Formula 1 cars. Rosberg was invited to drive the McLaren Mercedes in which his childhood idol Mika Häkkinen won the world championship. Hülkenberg took a seat in a historic W 25 Silver Arrow, while Wehrlein was allocated the world championship-winning car of 1954/55 – the famous W 196. For Rosberg, the outing in Häkkinen’s car was a way of celebrating his 31st birthday the day before. Wehrlein, himself a big fan of the ‘Flying Finn’ sensed an opportunity: “Hmm, I have a birthday coming up soon...”

Celebrities at the Norisring: The DTM race weekend in Nuremburg is generally considered to be the highlight of the season, and the celebrity count is correspondingly high. This year’s guest list included television presenter Thore Schölermann, girlfriend and actress Jana Kilka, RTL TV commentator Heiko Wasser and Formula 1 safety car driver Bernd Mayländer. Three others were taken on a lap of the circuit in a race taxi: model and presenter Rebecca Mir, husband and professional dancer Massimo Sinato and actor Bruno Eyron shared that special racing car cockpit experience at the Norisring.

Successes for AMG Customer Sports Programme: Daniele Perfetti has claimed two victories for the AMG Customer Sports Team AKKA ASP in the Blancpain GT Sports Club at Circuit Paul Ricard in southern France. Daniel Vogt (HP Racing) completed a successful weekend at Le Castellet with a second-place finish. Meanwhile, the ZAKSPEED/MANN-FILTER team braved adverse weather conditions at the Nürburgring to clinch their first podium, with Sebastian Asch and Kenneth Heyer taking the runner-up spot in the VLN Endurance Championship. Furthermore, Frank Montecalvo (DIME Racing) won his class in the Pirelli World Challenge at the Road America Circuit.

Three questions for Christian Vietoris

Chris, a few days have passed since the infamous race weekend at the Norisring. Now that the dust has settled a bit, how do you feel about Ekström’s antics?

Christian Vietoris: “Quite honestly, still the same. What Eki did there just isn’t on. I had some time in the last few days to read in full the reports featuring his comments about the incident. I sincerely hope that he doesn’t really believe all the things he has said. Otherwise, it’s going to be dangerous in the next few races for all the other 23 drivers on the track, because apparently he doesn’t know how his DTM car works.”

How long do you think this incident will keep you preoccupied?

Christian Vietoris: “For me, the matter is now closed, but it’s not really something you can simply forget. For Robert, the whole thing must feel rather like déjà vu. Last year, he got pushed by another Audi driver into a Mercedes ahead of him. But I agree with Pascal Wehrlein. After Spielberg, he said that karma has a way of balancing the scales. And ultimately he was right, because we ended up as champions. Maybe this year will turn out the same way.”

You’re currently at the training camp near Schladming. How do you rate the importance of these fitness weeks?

Christian Vietoris: “It’s just nice to spend a week training with the guys. The bond between us at Mercedes is superb. Obviously, we’re in Austria to work on our fitness and to do a lot of tests, but spending time with the other drivers is equally important.”

Soapbox Derby: The European Grand Prix in Baku was not the only race in which the Silver Arrows team had a stake. Runner-up was trainee Amber in her home-built, aerodynamic Silver Arrow.

Vive La Mannschaft: This was one date in his diary that Maximilian Götz had been really looking forward to. Before the start of the Euro 2016 football championship in France, he showed national squad member Mesut Özil the tools of his trade, namely the Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM. “This looks brilliant,” said Özil enthusiastically. “The ‘Vive La Mannschaft’ slogan on the car also makes it unique,” said Götz proudly. Next, a cockpit inspection: the left-footed player eased his right foot in, sank back into the seat and put his hands on the wheel of the number 84 car. The Arsenal man was favourably impressed: “I’d like to go for a ride in this!”
